America?s National Tree is The Oak
America has the grandest trees on earth?the largest, the oldest, and some of the most magnificent. Now, with Congressional passage and presidential signing of a historic bill, America has an official National Tree?the Oak.
A House surrounded by large trees is worth more money than a house without them.
A house with no trees can look hot in the summer, can appear unbalanced or can suggest that the owner has a lack of interest in their property. Established residential areas are more inviting and restful simply because of the presence of mature trees. Trees on private property can contribute to the value of the real estate, increasing values 5-20%.
Prehistoric tree forms that made up the immense forests in the Carboniferous period were important Air purifiers today their fossils are what we now mine as "coal"
As the trees and plants died, they sank to the bottom of the swamps of oceans. They formed layers of a spongy material called peat. Over many hundreds of years, the peat was covered by sand and clay and other minerals, which turned into a type of rock called sedimentary. More and more rock piled on top of more rock, and it weighed more and more. It began to press down on the peat. The peat was squeezed and squeezed until the water came out of it and it eventually, over millions of years, it turned into coal, oil or petroleum, and natural gas.
Trees help supply the Oxygen we need to breathe.
Each year an acre of trees can produce enough oxygen to keep eighteen people alive. They also refresh our air by using up some of the carbon dioxide that we exhale and that our factories and vehicles create. "One acre of forest absorbs Six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out Four tons of oxygen, Thats enough to meet the annual needs of Eighteen people". ---USDA

The Importance of Mulching
A newly planted tree?s best friend is mulch. It is very important to remember to mulch your tree after you have planted it. Mulch is a valuable for your trees health and care because ?Mulch insulates the soil helping to provide a buffer from heat and cold temperatures. ?Mulch retains water helping to keep the roots moist. ?Mulch keeps weeds out to help prevent root competition. ?Mulch prevents soil compaction. ?Mulch reduces lawn mower damage. *Most people do not properly mulch their trees. Some even over mulch which can in some cases harm their tree. Steps to Adding Mulch Around Your Tree 1.Add mulch to the base of your tree by removing any grass within a 3 to 10 foot area depending on the size of your tree. 2.Pour natural mulch such as wood chips or bark pieces 2 to 4 inches deep within the circle. 3.Keep the mulch from touching the trunk of the tree.
Trees are strong and tend to thrive even when faced with obstacles in their way
In Indiana, a tree growing on top of the courthouse in downtown Greensburg has become the stuff of legends. Various myths have been propagated since 1870, when the tree was first spotted, about how it came to grow 115 feet up in the air. Even more curious than its genesis, however, is the tree's continued existence. How does it survive on the roof without soil and water? And has the same tree lived on top of the tower all this time?
Signs of Spring
Often the first signs of spring occur in the form of buds and flowers on the trees around us. This small sign often begins the reintroduction of vivid colors within a properties landscape.
Lets face it after these last few winters we have had, we patiently have awaited these signs to show us Winter is on it's way out!
Trees can provide changing color to a landscape year round
From the Flowers and new buds in spring, to the changing colors in the fall or the constant evergreens in winter. Trees provide a colorful and changing backdrop to our lives. Proper tree pruning helps maintain this asset to your property.
City trees often serve several architectural and engineering functions.
By planting trees and shrubs, we return to a more natural, less artificial environment. Birds and other wildlife are attracted to the area. The natural cycles of plant growth, reproduction, and decomposition are again present, both above and below ground. Natural harmony is restored to the urban environment. Trees provide privacy, emphasize views, or screen out objectionable views. They reduce glare and reflection. They direct pedestrian traffic. They provide background to and soften, complement, or enhance architecture.
Trees can effectively be used to keep a house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Evergreen Trees planted on the north side of a house can sheild it from cold winds. Deciduous Trees planted to the south side of a house allow much of the Winter suns rays to reach the house, thus providing some warmth. In Summer, the same trees will shade the house and make rooms on that side of the house cooler.
